Which style of dance should I learn?

With the sheer number of different styles on offer, deciding on what you want to learn to dance at our Sutherland Shire studio may seem like a difficult decision. But it doesn’t have to be – there are factors that can help you choose a style that suits you best. Read ahead to learn how to find the best dance lessons in the Sutherland Shire.

Watch a video on each style

It’s naturally going to be hard to choose a style if you’re unfamiliar with it! Thankfully, there are a myriad of videos available on our website for you to watch and admire. Have a look at each style and see if there are any which particularly take your fancy. By becoming more familiar with the differences between each one, it will be easier to make a choice.

Contemplate your reasons

Your motivations behind wanting to undertake dance lessons in the Sutherland Shire can offer insight into what style may suit you best. If you want to learn a romantic routine with your partner, consider taking a foxtrot, tango, rumba, bolero or waltz class. On the other hand, if you’re looking to get fitter, the fast-paced salsa may be a better match.

Assess your physical state

Certain styles, such as the cha-cha, the salsa, and disco, may be more physically demanding than others. It may be a good idea to ease your way into your dance lessons in the Sutherland Shire by starting with a gentler style, such as the waltz or bolero. Of course, you are more than welcome to take on the challenge of a more intense style if you feel you’re up to it!

Consider your personality and tastes

It almost goes without saying that different styles suit different people. Are you a jazz fan? Then you might like the retro Lindy Hop or the West Coast Swing. Are you sensual and intuitive? Try the improvisational Argentine Tango or the Bachata. If you’re playful and full of energy, you might suit the Salsa, the Mambo, Disco or the Cha Cha. Your personal preferences play a big role in finding the best style to learn to dance at the Sutherland Shire studio.

When it comes down to it, you’ll never really know if you love a style until you’ve tried it. Give one (or three) a go and see how you go. You can always try another style until you find the right fit – or perhaps you’ll fall in love with trying out all the different options!

You may find one particular style that you adore, or you might end up enjoying multiple ones. This is totally fine – many performers alternate between styles or even opt to combine them. At the end of the day, if you want to learn to dance in the Sutherland Shire, what matters most is that you come to our studio and give 110%!
